Renting a pickup for a move: what a crew cab actually solves

The awkward thing about a moving day is that it has two completely different transport problems happening at once. There is a pile of furniture that needs an open bed and does not care about comfort. And there are three or four people who agreed to help, who need seats, and who are going to be in the vehicle all day.

A lot of rental fleets make you pick one. That is the specific problem a crew cab solves.

What crew cab means

A Ford F-150 Crew Cab is the four-door body style. The back seats are full seats with proper doors, not a jump bench behind the front row that you reach by folding somebody forward.

So you get the open bed for the things that are dirty, awkward or too long for a car, and you get a back row that adults can sit in for a day without resenting you. For most household moves that combination is worth more than raw capacity.

When a pickup is the wrong answer

It is worth being straight about this, because we would rather you had the right vehicle than the one you first asked for.

A pickup bed is open. That means weather, and in Louisiana that means a real chance of rain arriving on the one afternoon you needed it not to. If what you are moving is mattresses, upholstered furniture, boxes of paper or anything electrical, an open bed is a gamble unless you have proper covering and the straps to keep it on at speed.

It also means anything left in the bed is visible and reachable whenever you are parked. For a move happening in stages over a day, that matters more than people expect.

If your load is bulky rather than heavy, and especially if it is weather sensitive, an enclosed vehicle is often better. A Chevy Suburban with the rear seats folded swallows a surprising amount and keeps all of it dry and out of sight.

Things people forget to plan

• Straps and covering. An unsecured load is unsafe and illegal, and the time to discover you have neither is not when the truck is loaded.
• Loading height. A pickup bed sits high. Lifting a washing machine to that height is a different job from sliding it into a low van.
• Length. Long items will overhang, which has its own rules and needs to be flagged.
• Who is driving. An F-150 Crew Cab is a big vehicle. If the plan is to hand it to whoever is nearest, it is worth checking they are comfortable with that.

Tell us the dimensions, not the vehicle

The most useful phone call you can make is the one where you describe the load rather than name the truck. Tell us what the largest item is, roughly how much there is, whether it is going in one trip or several, and how many people are coming.

Sometimes the answer really is the F-150. Sometimes it is the Suburban. Sometimes it is a smaller vehicle and two trips, which is cheaper and less stressful than one heroic load. It costs us nothing to tell you that, and a customer who had the right vehicle is worth more to us than one extra day on a truck rental.

Fuel, and the thing that surprises people

A full-size pickup does not return the fuel economy of the car you drive daily, and a loaded one returns less again. Over a long moving day with several trips across town, that adds up to a real number rather than a rounding error.

It is not a reason to avoid the truck. It is a reason to budget for it honestly alongside the rental itself, and to plan your trips so you are not crossing Lafayette four times with a quarter load each time.

Weekends are priced separately

Most moves happen at a weekend, and we price weekend rentals differently from a straight daily rate. That is worth asking about specifically rather than assuming the daily figure multiplies out.
